You Know What's Spooky? Big Beauty Edition

Doing the fact checking on this one had me....extra nauseous...maybe it's because I'm a mom of a tween girl?

The facts:

  • 13 Companies own the Vast Majority of the $100 Billion US beauty industry
  • CHILDREN (ages 6-12), spent $4.5 billion on beauty and skincare in the last year (okay well, obviously their parents/guardians did because...next fact)
  • Beauty Industry marketing directly targets children as young as 3 (primarily girls- shocker)
  • Make Up and Skin Care often contains....PFAS, Heavy Metals, Phthalates, Parabens, formaldehyde, and more!
  • in the past 5 years a huge increase in 'cosmeticorexia' in young girls
  • The beauty industry is mostly SELF REGULATED. Cosmetics do not need to have premarket approval from FDA. 2022 with MoCRA FINALLY brought some huge, much needed changes (the first since 1938), but again it not much. MOCRA requires " Adequate substantiation of safety," but this does not mean 3rd party testing. It requires product labeling, but doesn't ban any ingredients.
